Mineral oil

Mineral oil, unlike edible vegetable oils, is any of several colorless, odorless, light mixtures of higher alkanes from a mineral source, specifically a petroleum distillate. The name 'mineral oil' alone is not precise, having been used for many specialty oils over the last few centuries. Often, mineral oil is a liquid byproduct of refining crude oil to make gasoline and other petroleum products.

Synthetic Oil

Synthetic oil is a lubricant composed of artificially produced chemical compounds. Synthetic lubricants can be produced using chemically modified petroleum components instead of pure crude oil, but can also be synthesized from other raw materials. However, the base material is crude oil that has been distilled and then physically and chemically modified. The actual synthesis process and composition of the additives are often a trade secret and vary among manufacturers.
